Adultos Mayores Anfitriones – AMA Oaxaca, winner and Impact Hub Fellow of the Impact Hub Fellowship for Longer Lives, a support program for new ventures that confront the challenges and opportunities posed by the increase in life expectancy and demographic aging.
The project Adultos Mayores Anfitriones (AMA Oaxaca) was chosen as the winner of the Impact Hub Fellowship for Longer Lives, a support program for scalable solutions towards healthy aging from AXA, Swiss Re Foundation, Impact Hub Fellowship Association and in collaboration with the Impact Hub Oaxaca. The announcement was made at a public ceremony on Wednesday, November 12th following a morning of pitches from the three finalists of the program in front of a jury of experts.
The winning project was considered the most innovative in confronting the challenges of the increased life expectancy of an aging population in Mexico. AMA Oaxaca trains seniors in this southern Mexican state as hosts, building their skills and capacities to launch their own touristic enterprise through a cooperative platform. The project catalyses the education, training and economic development for seniors. It aims to co-create with hosts services tailored to senior visitors – that represent a large percentage of Oaxacan tourists and one of the most dynamic industries in Oaxaca.
The Impact Hub Fellowship for longer lives will continue to support the launch of AMA Oaxaca through August 2015, with a monthly stipend, seed capital, business consulting, a workspace and access to the Impact Hub, Swiss Re Foundation and AXA Seguros networks. In total, the value of this support is over $260,000 MXN.
The final presentations to the jury were held in the Impact Hub Oaxaca facilities the morning of Wednesday, followed by the Awards Ceremony that same evening.
The jury was composed of:
- Julieta Villacaña – Impact Hub Oaxaca
- Megan Martin – Impact Hub Oaxaca
- Omar Bañuelos – AXA Seguros Mexico
- Guillermo Melgoza – AXA Seguros Mexico
- Richard Schneider – Swiss Re Mexico
The Impact Hub Fellowship for longer lives competition was launched in April, with the selection of six semi-finalist projects in June. The field was cut to three finalists in July by a jury of experts and partners. The three finalists received financial support, mentoring, intensive training and a workspace at the Impact Hub Oaxaca for three months, reaching culmination November 12th when the Fellow was selected.

Adultos Mayores Anfitriones (AMA)
Tours and touristic services offered in Oaxaca can often be exhausting, not taking into account the needs and interests of older adults who visit the city in large numbers. AMA proposes to train and collaborate with Oaxcan seniors to design and develop services and packages complimentary to the traditional tour, but customized especially for senior visitors. The offering suggests an innovative approach to tourism designed by seniors for seniors – a large and oft-neglected population. The vision for AMA Oaxaca is to see this famously hospitable city filled with elder hosts (or AMAs) who can share their vision of its rich cultural offering, creating a uniquely personal and rich experience for both visitors and hosts.
Aliméntate Bien, Aliméntate Sano (ABAS)
ABAS is a project that seeks to meet the food needs of the elderly, providing access to healthy food at home. ABAS maps the health and nutritional needs of senior customers, providing them healthy, in-season, quality packages of fruit and vegetable delivered right to their homes.
Centro de Atención Bienestar y Desarrollo Integral para personas mayores de 60 años “Te Quiero te Cuido”
The Quiero te Cuido proposes an alternative to the traditional retirement and nursing homes found in Oaxaca City. The Center will provide recreational, social, productive, medical, educational and psychological services to its senior members with a human rights approach.
